Two boys start their day in their own neighborhood, and then explore the downtown, taking in all of the sights and sounds the city has to offer. Basketball, water pistols, skate parks and street performers; the kids are pulled through the city streets by rhythm and rhyme, music and dance. With her signature spoken word-style poetry, Shauntay Grant creates an appealing and accessible follow-up to the award-winning Up Home. The City Speaks in Drums is a great way to encourage kids to explore their own city and get them talking about the special places they like to visit and the different people they meet.

"If you want rhythm and rhyme or want to feel the beat on your feet or in your heart, this is the book for you…The City Speaks in Drums takes the reader on a journey through the splendid sounds of an urban jungle. The dub poetry style of book makes the words come alive…[and] the illustrations are superb."
CM Magazine - September 10, 2010
"The artwork complements the text wonderfully and is sure to enhance the reading experience for those who know the city well and provides readers unfamiliar with the city with a sense of belonging by introducing them to real people and places as well as the rhythms that flow through and connect them to each other…Highly Recommended."
Canadian Children's Book News - July 1, 2010
"Everything about this book speaks of vitality...A beautiful addition to any collection. The subject and artwork speak to the free spirit and inner joy in each of us, no matter what our age."
